The King loves gold! He wears gold rings, crown, cape, shirt, pants, and even gold underwear! The gold is very heavy which is why the king can only move one step at a time but in any direction. When the king is checkmated (trapped) then the entire army loses.

Don’t mess with the Queen! She is the most powerful piece on the board. The Queen has the combined powers of a Bishop and a Rook. That is she can move in diagonal lines like a bishop and straight lines like a rook.

These Disco Bishops love dancing in diagonals lines! You have one bishop on dark squares (black shoes) and one on light squares (white shoes). Do not get those disco shoes dirty! If you ever forget how the bishop moves, check out the diagonal cut in his helmet!

The Knight moves one, two, and over one. He moves in the shape of the letter L. The knight is the only piece that can jump over things. He always lands on a square the opposite color of the one he’s on.

The Rooks are big, strong, scary, and… They love to Dance! They have their own special song and dance. Rooks move “up, down, and side to side I said up, down, side to side”

The wimpiest solder in your army! However, the pawn is also the bravest piece in your army!! That’s right, pawns never retreat. Pawns can only move forward one step at a time. Except on his first move; he can pawn power and move two spaces forward. The pawn can only capture diagonally. If he makes it to the other side of the board, it promotes and can become a Knight, Bishop, Rook, or even the Queen.

A white square belongs on the right, and Queen starts on her color. Pawns up front, Rooks on the edge, and put you knights away from the royal couple. You don’t want to accidentally get horse slobber on the King and Queen!
